Shielding degrades. Lead cracks when aprons are folded; seams separate; hook-and-loop closures fail. An apron with a defect over a critical organ is worse than useless because staff believe they are protected. A documented inspection program is both a safety practice and, in most jurisdictions, a requirement.

Who requires it

Expectations vary by state radiation-control program, but the common baseline is: visual and tactile inspection on receipt and at least annually thereafter; fluoroscopic or radiographic inspection at defined intervals; written acceptance and reject criteria; and a log. Accreditation surveys (Joint Commission, DNV) will ask to see the log and the criteria.

Inspection method

  1. Visual — lay the apron flat under good light. Look for surface cracks, stiff or brittle areas, and closure damage.
  2. Tactile — run your hands over the whole surface, feeling for gaps, lumps or thin spots in the shielding.
  3. Fluoroscopic / radiographic — image the apron (low mA, spot images or a single AP radiograph). Defects appear as bright spots or lines.

Reject criteria (typical)

  • Any defect (crack, hole, separation) in the critical zone — the area covering reproductive organs, sternum and thyroid: reject.
  • Defect elsewhere larger than ~15 mm² (about the area of a pencil eraser), or total defect area over ~670 mm²: reject.
  • Closure or strap failure that prevents proper fit: repair or reject.
  • Confirm against your own physicist's or state program's stated thresholds — numbers above are a common convention, not a universal rule.

Care that extends apron life

  • Never fold. Hang on a proper apron rack or lay flat. Folding is the single biggest cause of premature cracking.
  • Clean with a damp cloth and mild disinfectant per the manufacturer's guidance; do not soak or machine wash.
  • Transport rolled loosely, not folded, if a rack is not available.
  • Assign each apron an ID and track it — you cannot manage a fleet you cannot identify.

Retirement

Aprons that fail inspection come out of service immediately and are tagged so they cannot be returned to the floor. Lead and lead-composite aprons are hazardous waste — use a licensed disposal vendor and keep the manifest. Lead-free aprons can usually go to standard waste; confirm with the manufacturer.

Starter checklist

  • Every apron has a unique ID and an inspection record.
  • Inspection on receipt, then at least annually.
  • Written acceptance/reject criteria approved by your RSO or physicist.
  • Racks in every location where aprons are stored — no folding.
  • Failed aprons tagged, removed, and dispositioned with documentation.
  • Replacement budget planned on a rolling cycle, not all at once.
